In 2000, Zhonghua Renmin Gongheguo Guojia Tongyong Yuyan Wenzifa (ZRGGTYW, the Law of the People’s Republic of China on the Standard Spoken and Written Chinese Language)2 was passed, and ordained that the common spoken and written language for China are represented by Putonghua and standard Chinese characters.
