Only if students trust their teacher will the communications process yield such things as the level of understanding a student has attained on any topic. If that component is in place, then creative questioning, which requires planning ahead, can sometimes reveal what the teacher needs to know. So can writing exercises that focus not on correctness but on a recording of the student’s thoughts on a topic.

For example, if a teacher sees a student engaged in an argument with another student, the teacher could intervene in a manner that speaks of trust. The teacher can ask to speak privately with the student escalating the argument and explain to that student that his/her behavior is disruptive and could spiral into a more serious disciplinary offense. With trust, the student will listen and see the intervention as a helpful and thoughtful move from a teacher who truly cares about bringing out the best in his/her student, both academically and socially.

Teachers communicate diversity in instructional practices and experiential learning activities that create curiosity in students who want to understand the interrelationship of cultural experiences.
